First Implementation of A.I. Signal Control in Taiwan

This project is the first implementation of AI signal control in Taiwan with a decentralized framework to solve congestion problems in real-time.
To proof the feasibility of AI signal control, RS Ltd. cooperated with the Taoyuan City Transportation Bureau, and selected five consecutive intersections in Dayuan area as the demonstration site. Including: west side of Dayuan Interchange of Freeway No. 2, Hengnan Intersection, Pin'an Intersection, Min'an Intersection and Minsheng Intersection, 5 intersections.      

**** Through image-processing vehicle detector, AI could calculate green time in real-time. Traffic signals can dynamically adjust to reduce the average stop delay by 20%, and then avoiding traffic jams, making traffic smoother.

To prove the feasibility of AI signal control, RisingStar Ltd. cooperated with the Taoyuan City Transportation Bureau, and selected five consecutive intersections in Dayuan area as the demonstration site. The selected five intersections located along Zhongzheng East Road which are: west side of Dayuan Interchange of Freeway No. 2, Hengnan Intersection, Pin'an Intersection, Min'an Intersection and Minsheng Intersection, respectively.

Based on the traffic flow data collected by video-based vehicle detectors, AI could calculate green time in real-time and adjust traffic signal dynamically. In the before-and-after analysis, AI signal control system can reduce the average stop delay by 20%, and then avoiding traffic jams, making traffic smoother

Existing traffic problems before the improvement:

  1. Traffic demand unstable Dayuan area is close to Taoyuan International Airport, and the traffic demand is different from the general urban AM/PM peak pattern. Therefore, the traditional TOD signal control method often results in a wasted or insufficient green time.
  2. Lacking of vehicle storage space Three intersections on the East side of the field are very close to each other, and lacking of vehicle storage space. Spill back often happens due to the duration and offset of signal timing do not match to the traffic demand.
  3. Platoon progression in multi-phase The intersection on the East connects the ramp to freeway has a complex phase configuration. There has a difficulty in platoon progression with other intersections.
